Commercially, the album was a juggernaut. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 496,000 album-equivalent units and saw all 19 of its tracks enter the Billboard Hot 100. Despite this success, critical reception was deeply divided. Supporters praised the album's instrumental completeness and daring energy, viewing it as a necessary evolution for hip-hop. Conversely, detractors labeled it a shiny but empty spectacle, arguing that the heavy reliance on pop superstars and the looming shadow of Kanye West’s influence compromised Scott’s unique identity. Whether viewed as an auteur's masterpiece or a cluttered collection of set pieces, Utopia remains a defining moment in 2023 music culture.
