In short: Since 2007, this British comedy panel show has challenged viewers to spot the deception. Through improvised storytelling and embarrassing personal tales, celebrity guests and team captains engage in a high-stakes game of truth and fabrication, where a single wrong guess can hand a point to the opposing team.

First broadcast on BBC One on 16 June 2007, Would I Lie to You? (WILTY) features comedians David Mitchell and Lee Mack as permanent team captains. The format relies on guests revealing unusual facts or embarrassing stories, which the opposing team must evaluate. If a team guesses correctly, they gain a point; an incorrect guess awards a point to the opponents.

The show's mechanics have evolved through various rounds. "Home Truths" requires panellists to improvise answers based on unseen cards, while "This is My..." involves a silent guest and three conflicting accounts of a relationship. Early series featured rounds like "Ring of Truth" and "Telly Tales," though the latter was exclusive to the first series.

The show's popularity has seen significant fluctuations in viewership. The series five premiere reached a peak of 4 million viewers, the highest for the show to date. While the first series began with 3.8 million viewers, the third series opener saw a lower count of 2.8 million. The show has since expanded internationally, with versions appearing in New Zealand, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Iceland.

Production details have shifted alongside the show's success. While originally hosted by Angus Deayton, Rob Brydon took over in 2009. Scoring methods also changed; from series six onwards, scores were re-recorded to match the final 30-minute broadcast edits, correcting a previous discrepancy where scores reflected the full amount of material filmed during recording.
