How a Jane Austen classic inspired a Canadian skating drama
In short: Beyond the ice-skating drama of Finding Her Edge lies a surprising literary connection. This Netflix series, which follows a competitive skater navigating complex romances and family struggles, is loosely based on Jane Austen's Persuasion, blending modern teen tension with classic storytelling themes.
Premiering on Netflix on 22 January 2026, Finding Her Edge is an eight-part Canadian sports teen drama. The series follows Adrianna, a competitive ice skater from a dynastic family, as she navigates a complicated romantic web involving her new partner, Brayden, and her ex-boyfriend and former partner, Freddie. While the plot focuses on the high stakes of figure skating, the narrative structure is loosely inspired by Jane Austen's novel Persuasion. The plot also explores her older sister's individual competitive challenges and her younger sibling's search for identity. Additionally, the family's financial stability is threatened by her widowed father's business struggles.
The production features significant cameos and technical expertise from the skating world. In episode 5, Canadian five-time figure skating champions Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier make cameo appearances, whereas British champions Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson voice two commentators. To ensure authenticity, the production employed several Canadian junior athletes as skating doubles, including World Junior bronze medalist Nadiia Bashynska and Peter Beaumont. Author Jennifer Iacopelli also makes a brief appearance as a librarian during the seventh episode.
The series has been met with critical acclaim, holding a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 11 critic reviews. Directed by Shamim Sarif and Jacqueline Pepall, the show was filmed across Ontario locations such as Orillia, Barrie, and Wasaga Beach. Following its successful debut, the series was renewed for a second season on 3 February 2026, with filming for the new season scheduled to commence in late August 2026. The show's cast features Madelyn Keys and Cale Ambrozic. It was originally intended for the Canadian channel Family before being moved to Ici Radio-Canada Télé.
