In short: When Bryan Lee O'Malley began writing Scott Pilgrim, he expected to sell only 1,000 copies. He didn't foresee a multimedia empire spanning films, video games, and animated series, all sparked by a bittersweet Canadian indie song lyric.

The Scott Pilgrim series, created by Canadian artist Bryan Lee O'Malley, began as a six-volume black-and-white graphic novel series released between August 2004 and July 2010. The series follows Scott Pilgrim, a 23-year-old Toronto slacker and bassist for the band Sex Bob-Omb, as he navigates a romance with Ramona Flowers and battles her seven evil exes. O'Malley's creative spark was ignited by the 1998 single "Scott Pilgrim" by the Canadian band Plumtree. The original digest-sized volumes were initially published by the independent house Oni Press. These early black-and-white stories were later reissued in full colour by Fourth Estate.

Specifically, the lyric "I've liked you for a thousand years" served as the primary inspiration for the character and series. While the work is often described as manga-influenced, O'Malley prefers the term "manga-influenced comics," noting that he sought to create a hybrid style that merged American and Japanese comic book traditions. To understand the Japanese market, the author looked to the book Even a Monkey Can Draw Manga for guidance. He also noted that the exploded page layouts of Koudelka influenced his own work.

Despite the massive success of the franchise—including Edgar Wright's 2010 film adaptation and a Netflix animated series released in November 2023—O'Malley has been cautious about the series' longevity. He has expressed that continuing the story indefinitely would be emotionally exhausting, famously comparing the potential for burnout to the Belgian artist Hergé's struggle with his character Tintin. While he has toyed with the idea of a continuation involving Scott and Ramona, he has remained focused on the completed narrative arc. The franchise expanded into gaming with a Ubisoft title for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Additionally, a special print collection was released in late 2024 to celebrate the series' longevity.
