The unexpected rise and sudden end of Amazon's first Canadian scripted original
In short: In 2021, Amazon Prime Video made a bold move by ordering its first scripted Canadian original series. What began as a way to reconnect a father with his birth daughter turned into a complex drama of inheritance, ambition, and family secrets set against the backdrop of Ontario.
Created by Julian Doucet, the comedy series The Lake is deeply personal, drawing in part from Doucet's own real-life experiences. The narrative follows Justin, played by Jordan Gavaris, a man returning from abroad after a breakup. His mission is to bond with Billie, the teenage daughter he previously placed for adoption. However, his homecoming is complicated by a surprising inheritance: the family cottage, a place of childhood significance, was left to his ambitious and conniving stepsister, Maisy-May, portrayed by Julia Stiles.
The series features a rich ensemble of characters navigating life in North Bay, Ontario, where filming took place throughout late 2021. The cast includes Terry Chen as Victor Lin, a Chinese-Canadian former professional hockey player, and Madison Shamoun as Billie. The show explores themes of identity and outsider perspectives through characters like Killian, a mixed-race teenager, and Opal Lin, who identifies as genderqueer. The community is rounded out by local figures like Riley, a store operator and artist, and Ulrika, a Swedish-descended cabin owner.
Despite its successful launch and a second season renewal in July 2022, the series met an abrupt conclusion. While the first season premiered on June 17, 2022, and the second followed on June 9, 2023, the show's future was cut short. On January 6, 2024, Jordan Gavaris announced that the series would not be renewed for a third season, bringing an unexpected end to this chapter of Canadian scripted programming on the platform.
