The tragic, brilliant life of the man behind the face of Ernest P. Worrell
In short: Jim Varney was a classically trained actor and Shakespearean student who became a pop-culture icon as the bumbling Ernest P. Worrell. While his catchphrase defined a generation of commercials, his private life was a complex struggle with addiction, depression, and a desperate, unfulfilled desire to be taken seriously as an artist.
Born in Lexington, Kentucky, in 1949, Jim Varney was a child prodigy who memorized long poems and imitated cartoons. By age 17, he was performing in coffee houses, eventually studying Shakespeare at the Barter Theatre. Before achieving fame as the denim-clad, accident-prone Ernest P. Worrell, Varney was a working actor in television flops like Pink Lady and Jeff and a regular on Johnny Cash and Friends. His transition to the Ernest character, which began in 1980, turned him into a national advertising staple for dairies, gas companies, and car dealerships.
The character of Ernest was a double-edged sword. While it earned him a Daytime Emmy for the series Hey Vern, It's Ernest! and spawned a successful film franchise, it also trapped him in a typecast that he spent his later years trying to escape. Varney sought more serious roles, receiving critical acclaim for his performance as an abusive father in the 1997 independent film 100 Proof. He also voiced Slinky Dog in the Toy Story franchise, a role he continued to perform even as his health began to decline.
Behind the scenes, Varney battled severe alcohol and cocaine abuse, which he later described as a form of self-destruction linked to the pressures of fame. A lifelong smoker, he was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1998 after a persistent cough worsened during the filming of Treehouse Hostage. Despite undergoing chemotherapy, he continued to work until his death at age 50 in February 2000. His legacy remains a mix of the slapstick comedy that made him famous and the untapped potential of a versatile performer who felt he had wasted too much time.
