In short: What happens when an immortal being falls in love with a mortal? In Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms, a mystical race called the Iorph faces a devastating paradox: to love a human is to guarantee a lifetime of profound loss. It is a high-fantasy exploration of motherhood and the mechanics of aging.

Centred on the Iorph, this tale follows a humanoid species capable of surviving centuries after their physical growth ceases at age fifteen. Living in isolation from people, these 'Clan of the Separated' members dedicate themselves to crafting Hibiol, a unique fabric used for recording history. Because of their longevity, the Iorph chief Racine warns Maquia that creating emotional attachments to outsiders will lead to unbearable loneliness.

The narrative shifts when Maquia finds a human newborn and raises him as her own son, Ariel. As decades pass, the biological reality of their different lifespans creates a widening rift. While Maquia remains unchanged, Ariel grows into a man, then an old man, eventually dying while she remains young. This dynamic serves as a poignant meditation on motherhood; Maquia must endure the "Red Eye" disease's destruction of her people and the inevitable decay of the human life she chose to protect.

The film also explores the political consequences of immortality. The Kingdom of Mezarte, desperate to maintain power as their ancient flying dragons (Renato) die out, attempts to seize Iorph blood for the royal lineage. This conflict highlights a recurring theme in fantasy: the human desire to cheat death through the exploitation of others. Ultimately, Maquia’s journey concludes with her honoring the pain of loss, concluding that while loving a mortal brought her happiness, it also forced her to shoulder the weight of centuries of solitude.

Released in 2018 and directed by Mari Okada, the film has been praised for its ability to anchor imaginative fantasy in universal themes. Critics have noted its focus on the beauty of motherhood and the strength found in love despite the inevitability of aging.
