In short: In the Ad Stella timeline, a technology designed to help humans survive the harshness of space transformed into a deadly military tool. This is the story of GUND, a brain-computer interface that grants incredible power at a terrifying physical cost to its pilots.

The GUND technology originated in Ad Stella 101 at the Vanadis Institute. Originally, researchers developed this advanced brain-computer interface to allow the human nervous system to control artificial organs and appendages, specifically to help humans survive the difficult conditions of space habitation. However, after receiving funding from the manufacturer Ochs Earth, the tech was adapted into the 'GUND Format' for military applications.

This evolution led to the creation of GUND-ARMS, mobile suits that utilize the GUND Format to significantly boost pilot performance. The cost of this power is extreme: extensive use of these machines has resulted in pilots being either crippled or killed. Such risks prompted the Mobile Suit Development Council to enact a lifelong prohibition of the GUND Format and its various uses.

The fallout of this technology was violent. To erase all traces of the research, Delling Rembran, president of the Benerit Group, ordered the destruction of the Vanadis research facility, Fólkvangr. Only two individuals escaped the slaughter: test pilot Elnora Samaya and her daughter, Ericht Samaya, aged four. Because the original development team was primarily composed of women, the survivors and those associated with the technology became known as 'witches.'

Set against a backdrop of economic inequality between 'Spacians' in space and 'Earthians' on Earth, the series uses this technology as a metaphor for political corruption and capitalism. The narrative follows Suletta Mercury, who arrives at the Benerit Group-run Asticassia School of Technology piloting the Gundam Aerial—a machine built with the very GUND technology that the world has sought to ban.
