A teenage superheroine struggles to balance saving the world with being a normal girl.
In short: Created by Rob Renzetti, this animated series follows XJ-9, a sophisticated robot girl who prefers the name Jenny Wakeman. While she is Earth's primary defender against the robotic Cluster Empire, her true desire is to experience the mundane life of a typical high school student in the town of Tremorton.
The series originated from a 1999 pilot titled My Neighbor Was a Teenage Robot, which Renzetti developed for the Oh Yeah! Cartoons showcase. After Nickelodeon commissioned a full series, it premiered in August 2003. The show centers on Jenny, a state-of-the-art android built by her mother, Dr. Nora Wakeman. Despite being equipped with an arsenal of weaponry, Jenny navigates the social pressures of Tremorton High School, often clashing with popular students Brit and Tiff Crust while relying on her friends Brad and Tuck Carbuckle.
The narrative frequently explores the tension between Jenny's duty and her personal identity. Her creator, Dr. Wakeman, constantly pushes her to focus on planetary defense, while the Cluster Empire—led by Queen Vexus—seeks to force Jenny into their robotic society. A significant revelation in the special Escape from Cluster Prime indicates that Vexus has been manipulating her own people by hiding the components necessary for robot transformation, framing Jenny as a villain to maintain control over the population.
Although the show was cancelled in 2005 due to low ratings, it maintained a dedicated following, with its final season airing on Nicktoons through 2009. The series has since appeared in various video games, including Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, and saw a 20th-anniversary web story titled Alternaversity written by Renzetti. While some critics found the show's teenage tropes outdated, others have praised its action-comedy blend, noting that its stylized aesthetic and humor have allowed it to remain a memorable entry in the Nickelodeon catalog.
