How a laundry maid became the Imperial Palace’s most vital forensic expert
In short: In a court governed by rigid hierarchy and lethal secrets, one woman survives by mastering the chemistry of the everyday. By identifying toxins in face powder and solving medical mysteries, she navigates a dangerous social labyrinth where a single mistake means death.
The series follows Maomao, an apothecary raised in a capital pleasure district who is sold into service at an Imperial Palace inspired by historical China. Initially working as a lowly laundry maid to remain anonymous, her life shifts when she identifies a mysterious illness affecting the Emperor’s infant heirs. She correctly suspects that toxic face powder used by the concubines is the culprit and provides an anonymous warning that saves Princess Lingli.
Jinshi, a powerful eunuch overseeing the Rear Palace, ultimately notices her specialized skills. Instead of penalising her involvement, he elevates her to an important role as Lady Gyokuyou's personal poison tester and lady-in-waiting, who is among the Emperor's preferred consorts. This role places Maomao at the center of forensic puzzles, political intrigues, and medical mysteries within the palace walls.
Critics have praised the series for its focus on deduction and forensic science rather than typical tropes. Reviewers highlight Maomao as a "refreshingly pragmatic and cynical protagonist" who relies on intellect to survive. The production by Toho Animation Studio and OLM is noted for its meticulous attention to historical detail, successfully elevating the source material into a prominent cultural hit that balances complex social hierarchy with scientific inquiry.
The series has achieved significant commercial success, ranking as the most-watched anime of 2025 on several Japanese streaming services. It also secured high rankings on Netflix Japan between 2021 and 2025. The acclaim extends to its voice acting, with Aoi Yūki winning awards for her portrayal of Maomao at both the Crunchyroll Anime Awards and the Animage Anime Grand Prix.
