Can a shadow steal your life and replace you entirely?
In short: In the fictional island of Hitogashima, a dark enigma unfolds when a young man returns to find his sister's death was no accident. He soon discovers the existence of Shadows—mysterious creatures capable of perfectly mimicking human appearance and memories to infiltrate society.
Yasuki Tanaka authored and drew the manga Summer Time Rendering, which appeared in Shōnen Jump+ between 23 October 2017 and 1 February 2021. Set on Hitogashima, the plot draws inspiration from the actual, unpopulated Tomogashima located in Wakayama Prefecture. The narrative follows Shinpei Ajiro, who returns to the island on July 22, 2018, to attend the funeral of his adoptive sister, Ushio Kofune. His grief turns to suspicion when he learns she may have been murdered, evidenced by strangulation marks on her neck.
The primary antagonists are the Shadows, creatures that act as doppelgängers. These entities can copy humans, including their memories, and even inanimate objects, though they face limitations with the latter. Led by the goddess Hiruko—often referred to as "mother"—the Shadows aim to kill their human counterparts and take their places. This threat is compounded by the island's unique history and the presence of hybrid entities, such as the local priest, who is a human-Shadow hybrid born from the first Shadow, Haine.
The complexity of the island's secrets is reflected in the character of Hizuru Minakata, a horror-mystery writer who uses the pen name Ryūnosuke Nagumo. Hizuru possesses the ability to detect Shadows and move at their speed by utilizing the data of her murdered twin brother, Ryūnosuke, which exists within her. The series has seen significant adaptation, including an anime television series produced by OLM that aired from April to September 2022, and a live-action film adaptation scheduled for 2027.
