From sketch comedy stardom to a tragic battle with Capgras delusion
In short: Tony Rosato was a versatile force in comedy, lending his voice to iconic characters like Luigi and appearing on Saturday Night Live. However, his career was overshadowed by a harrowing legal battle involving a profound psychological crisis that saw him detained for years without bail.
Born in Naples, Italy, in 1954, Rosato became a staple of North American comedy. He gained significant recognition as a cast member on SCTV, where he famously parodied Chef Pasquale as Marcello Sebastiano. This success paved the way for a tenure on Saturday Night Live during the 1981–82 season, making him the first cast member of the show not born in Canada or the United States.
Beyond live sketch comedy, Rosato was a prolific voice actor. He provided the voice for Luigi in the animated series based on Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World. His range extended into various other animated productions, from Resident Evil 3: Nemesis to the series Pelswick, demonstrating a career that spanned television, film, and voiceover work.
The later years of Rosato's life were marked by a profound mental health crisis. In 2005, he was arrested for criminal harassment following claims that his wife and daughter had been replaced by impostors. This specific delusion is known as Capgras delusion, a misidentification syndrome. Despite his lawyer's protests regarding his two-year detention without bail, the legal proceedings eventually resulted in a conditional discharge and a psychiatric hospital residence order.
Rosato's life ended in 2017 due to a heart attack at age 62. His passing prompted tributes from major institutions, including Saturday Night Live, and inspired a massive collaborative animation project dedicated to his memory and that of his colleague Harvey Atkin.
