The elegant facade of Jinshi: a royal secret hidden behind a eunuch's mask
In short: In the Imperial Palace, Jinshi is known as an elegant, untouchable eunuch managing the Rear Palace. However, this beautiful, androgynous administrator is living a lie. To protect his true identity, he uses suppressants to mimic a eunuch, hiding a lineage that could change the course of the empire.
Jinshi, whose full name is Ka Zuigetsu, serves as the male protagonist in Hyūganatsu's light novel series, The Apothecary Diaries. Within the Imperial Palace, he is perceived as a eunuch managing the Rear Palace, the residence for the Emperor's concubines and their attendants. His striking appearance is characterized by a soft, feminine face that contrasts with a well-built, masculine physique, creating an androgynous allure that attracts both men and women. He is frequently accompanied by his loyal attendant, Gaoshun. This companion has looked after him since his childhood.
This persona is a carefully maintained deception. In reality, Jinshi is not a eunuch; he uses anaphrodisiacs to suppress his sexuality and hide his true identity. He is actually the Emperor's brother, and further revelations suggest he is the Emperor's eldest son, having been swapped with the Emperor's deceased brother during infancy. This makes him next in the line of succession, a role he repeatedly expresses discontent with. His true status as the Emperor's son was discovered later by Maomao. This revelation adds significant weight to his reluctance regarding the throne.
The character's development has seen significant shifts from Hyūganatsu's original concepts. Initially, Jinshi was envisioned as a more vulnerable figure and a mere pawn in a political assassination arc, with a much more challenging relationship with his attendant, Gaoshun. Instead, he evolved into a powerful, charismatic figure. His dynamic with the protagonist, Maomao—an apothecary who is notably unimpressed by his beauty—remains the emotional core of the series, driving much of the narrative's tension and character growth. The author originally considered having Jinshi die during the story. She eventually decided to scrap that idea to focus on his personality.
