In short: Directed by Richard Donner and based on a Michael Crichton novel, Timeline promised a sophisticated blend of archaeology and science fiction. Instead, the production suffered from studio interference, a replaced musical score, and critical derision, ultimately losing nearly 50 million dollars and vanishing from the cultural conversation almost immediately.

The film follows a group of archaeology students who travel to 1357 medieval France to rescue their mentor, Professor Edward Johnston. They are sent by the ITC Corporation, which has accidentally opened a stable wormhole while experimenting with teleportation technology. The mission quickly turns into a desperate survival struggle as the students become trapped in the middle of the Hundred Years War, forced to navigate the brutal political landscape of the era.

Behind the scenes, the project was plagued by instability. Director Richard Donner faced significant pressure from Paramount Pictures executive Sherry Lansing, who demanded a major re-edit of the film. This change led to the replacement of the original score by Jerry Goldsmith—his final work before his 2004 death—with a new composition by Brian Tyler. Despite the efforts of the production team to minimize computer-generated imagery by employing medieval reenactors for battle sequences, the final product was widely panned.

Critics were largely unforgiving, with the film holding a 13% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers like Roger Ebert noted that the movie felt like a disjointed collision between a corporate thriller and a swashbuckling adventure, failing to commit to either tone. With a production budget of 80 million dollars and a global box-office return of only 43.9 million, the film is now frequently cited as a classic example of a major studio box-office bomb.
