In short: Ben Goertzel argues that intelligence isn't just processing power; it is the ability to detect patterns and achieve complex goals. By modeling knowledge as a probabilistic network of nodes, researchers aim to build agents that don't just calculate, but reason like humans.

Goertzel’s approach to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) centers on a cognitive architecture that mimics human behavior through social evidence and resource constraints. Unlike standard AI models, his framework utilizes a hybrid knowledge graph. This system integrates both symbolic and sub-symbolic knowledge, categorizing information into functional segments: fundamental, social, evidential, and imaginary. To handle internal cognitive restrictions, an inference engine alongside a memory storage system handles these elements.

To achieve this, Goertzel proposes initializing a 'baby-like' artificial intelligence in simulated environments, such as Second Life. The goal is to train these agents to produce increasingly powerful intelligence through experience. In his 2007 framework, he describes knowledge nodes carrying probabilistic truth values and 'attention values.' These attention values function similarly to weights in neural networks but are integrated into a system that combines a probabilistic inference engine with custom evolutionary programming.

While Goertzel is a leading developer of the OpenCog framework for AGI, his work has faced scrutiny. For instance, his role as Chief Scientist at Hanson Robotics involved the Sophia robot, which many experts dismissed as a PR stunt. Critics, including Meta's former chief AI scientist Yann LeCun, called claims that Sophia was 'basically alive' to be 'complete bullshit.' Despite such critiques, Goertzel remains a prominent figure in AGI theory, predicting that systems of his nature could potentially replace 80 percent of human jobs within the next few years.

The ultimate goal of this research is alignment: creating AI agents whose belief systems are consistent with human values and experiences. By modeling behavior based on social proof, the architecture aims to be applicable not just for robotics, but also for psychological treatment, online security, and community management.
