Sunderland's historic return to the European stage begins this season
In short: After a long absence from continental competition, Sunderland A.F.C. enters its second consecutive Premier League season. This 148th campaign marks a significant milestone for the club, as they balance domestic league play with a high-stakes journey through the UEFA Europa League.
The 2026–27 campaign represents a transformative era for Sunderland. This marks the club's second straight year in the Premier League, a feat following their historic qualification for European competition via league position last season. This achievement is particularly significant because it is the first time the club has participated in any European tournament since the 1973–74 season. This milestone follows their recent success in the domestic league. Such a feat highlights the club's rapid ascent in English football.
The club's schedule for the season is exceptionally dense. In addition to the Premier League, they are competing in the FA Cup and the EFL Cup. In the league phase, they host AZ, Dinamo Zagreb, Jagiellonia Białystok, and Levski Sofia, but travel to face Torreense, Lech Poznań, Milan, and Anderlecht. The Europa League league phase presents a diverse array of opponents. These fixtures test the squad's depth and versatility.
Preparation for this demanding schedule began well in advance. On 4 March, the club announced a pre-season tour in the United States, featuring matches against Leeds United, Liverpool, and Wrexham. This was later supplemented in June by friendlies against York City, Lens, and Rennes. To round out the domestic preparations, the Premier League fixtures were officially released on 19 June 2026. The summer schedule was finalised through several announcements. These matches ensure the team is ready for the competitive season ahead.
In the EFL Cup, Sunderland's status as a Premier League club grants them entry in the third round. Their path began at home against Hull City, followed by a fourth-round home fixture against Brentford. The club's position in the top flight dictates their tournament entry points. This structure shapes their entire competitive calendar.
