How a sociology graduate ended a two-decade drought for Indonesian tennis
In short: After 21 years without an Indonesian player in a Grand Slam singles main draw, Janice Tjen has rewritten the nation's sporting history. From the collegiate courts of California to the elite WTA Tour, her rapid ascent marks a significant resurgence for Indonesian tennis on the global stage.
Born in Jakarta in 2002, Janice Tjen’s path to professional tennis was shaped by both personal influence and strategic planning. Encouraged by her friend Priska Madelyn Nugroho, Tjen initially navigated the high costs of professional sports by pursuing a collegiate route. She played for the University of Oregon before transferring to Pepperdine University, eventually graduating with a degree in sociology in 2024.
Tjen's breakthrough arrived in 2025, a year that saw her shatter long-standing Indonesian records. Her victory over 24th seed Veronika deuce in the first round also marked the first Grand Slam singles match win for an Indonesian since Widjaja's 2003 Wimbledon campaign.
Her momentum continued through late 2025, where she achieved several milestones. In October, she reached the top 100 for the first time, becoming the sixth Indonesian to do so. By the end of that year, she had secured her first WTA Tour singles title at the Chennai Open, where she also completed a rare sweep of both singles and doubles titles alongside compatriot Aldila Sutjiadi. This success propelled her to a career-high singles ranking of world No. 35 in August 2026.
Tjen's impact is measured not just in rankings, but in her role as Indonesia's leading female player. Since May 2025, she has held the position of the nation's highest-ranked woman in singles, representing the second-highest singles peak ever achieved by an Indonesian woman, trailing only Yayuk Basuki.
