Indonesian badminton star Putri Kusuma Wardani is redefining her nation's presence on the global stage.
In short: Born in 2002, Putri Kusuma Wardani has evolved from a promising junior talent into a formidable force in international badminton. After overcoming a challenging 2023 season, she achieved a career-high world ranking of number 6 in 2025, marking a significant resurgence for Indonesian women's singles on the world circuit.
Putri Kusuma Wardani began her journey at the Exist Jakarta club, joining the Indonesian national training center in 2018. Her early career was defined by rapid development, including securing bronze medals at the 2018 Asian and World Junior Championships. By 2021, at age 18, she claimed her first Super 300 title at the Spain Masters, signaling her potential to compete against established international players.
The 2023 season proved to be a demanding test of resilience. Wardani faced a series of difficult draws against elite opponents, including An Se-young, Akane Yamaguchi, and Carolina Marín. Despite frequent early-round exits, she maintained her competitive drive, forcing top-tier players into intense matches. This period of intense exposure to high-level competition provided the tactical experience necessary for her subsequent breakthrough.
Her resurgence in 2024 and 2025 demonstrated a newfound mental maturity. In 2024, she ended a title drought at the Korea Masters and reached back-to-back finals at the Taipei and Hong Kong Open. Most notably, she secured a bronze medal at the 2025 World Championships in Paris, ending a ten-year medal drought for Indonesian women's singles in that tournament.
Wardani's success is deeply tied to her contributions to the Indonesian national team. She has been a consistent presence in team events, helping the squad secure medals at the Asia Team Championships, the Sudirman Cup, and the SEA Games. Her ability to balance individual performance with team responsibilities has solidified her status as a central figure in the current era of Indonesian badminton.
