In short: Before he was a Hall of Fame legend known as 'the Blade,' Alex English faced a childhood in South Carolina where he often survived on just one meal a day. This resilience eventually powered a career defined by unprecedented scoring consistency and dominance in the paint.

Born in Columbia, South Carolina, in 1954, Alex English’s path to basketball greatness was marked by early hardship. While his parents worked in New York, English and his siblings lived with their grandmother, frequently subsisting on a single daily meal. This grit transitioned to the court at the University of South Carolina, where he became a record-breaking star, scoring 1,972 points and establishing himself as a premier force in the SEC.

English’s professional ascent was a masterclass in adaptation. After being drafted 23rd overall by the Milwaukee Bucks in 1976, he struggled for minutes behind established veterans. A move to the Indiana Pacers as a free agent after 1978 provided the platform he needed, but it was a mid-season trade to the Denver Nuggets during the 1979–80 season that cemented his legacy. During his tenure in Denver from 1979 to 1989, he led the team to nine consecutive playoff appearances and two Midwest Division titles.

The 1980s belonged to English. He was the league's leading scorer during the 1982–83 season, averaging 28.4 points per game, and remained the NBA's top scorer throughout the decade. No other player has achieved the feat of reaching 2,000 points across eight straight seasons. Even without the benefit of the three-point line, which the NBA adopted in 1979–80, his efficiency was remarkable; in 1989, he famously scored 51 points in a single game without attempting a single three-pointer.

Beyond the statistics, English's career was defined by versatility. An eight-time All-Star and Naismith Hall of Fame inductee, his life has spanned coaching, business ventures like GreenSmart Botanicals, and even acting roles. Whether serving as a U.S. State Department Sports Envoy or as an NBA ambassador, his impact extends far beyond the hardwood.
