How a defensive specialist turned struggling units into elite statistical juggernauts
In short: From coaching the nation's worst defensive units to engineering top-tier turnovers, Alex Grinch has mastered the art of the defensive turnaround. His career spans elite programs like Ohio State and Oklahoma, proving that strategic adjustments can transform bottom-ranked statistics into championship-level performance.
Alex Grinch has built a reputation as a high-impact defensive coordinator, known for his ability to revitalize struggling rosters. While coaching at Oklahoma, he managed a major statistical transformation: the unit improved from 130th in pass defence and 101st in scoring defence under prior management to a 20th place ranking for minimal yards allowed per game in 2019. This turnaround helped the Sooners secure a Big 12 championship and a spot in the College Football Playoff semifinals.
His ability to influence player development is evidenced by his track record of producing professional talent. Grinch has coached over 40 student-athletes who reached the professional ranks, including two dozen NFL draft picks. His coaching history includes high-profile stints at Washington State, where he mentored All-American Hercules Mata'afa, and Ohio State, where he helped the Buckeyes secure a Big Ten and Rose Bowl victory in 2018.
However, his career also highlights the volatility of defensive coaching. At USC, Grinch inherited a unit that ranked 103rd in scoring defense in 2021, but he successfully improved the Trojans' turnover margin to the best in the nation by 2022. Despite this success, the unit's performance dipped in 2023, allowing 293 points over a seven-game stretch, which ultimately led to his dismissal in November 2023. He has since moved to Wisconsin and most recently joined UCF as defensive coordinator in December 2024.
