How a standout scholar became an NFL first-round selection
In short: Before dominating the trenches of the NFL, Alex Mack was a decorated wrestler and a high-achieving academic. His journey from a standout student at the University of California, Berkeley to a Pro Bowl center highlights a rare combination of intellectual rigor and elite physical performance.
Alex Mack's ascent to professional football was built on a foundation of exceptional versatility. Prior to his NFL tenure, he excelled at San Marcos High School, earning Co-Most Valuable Player honours on defence within the Channel League. Beyond football, Mack was a highly successful wrestler, competing for four years with the Royals and reaching a state final as a CIF champion.
His transition to the University of California, Berkeley, saw him balance intense physical demands with academic excellence. Mack achieved a 3.61 undergraduate GPA as a legal studies major and later graduated as a graduate student in education. His scholarly achievements were recognized with the Dr.addy Trophy in 2008, an award often called the "academic Heisman," making him the first Cal player to receive it.
On the field, Mack was a dominant force for the Golden Bears, making 39 consecutive starts and earning the Morris Trophy in both 2007 and 2008. This success translated to the professional level when the Cleveland Browns selected him in the first round with the 21st overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft. Throughout thirteen seasons, he remained a consistent star, securing various Pro Bowl nods and entering the College Football Hall of Fame in 2025.
Mack's career was marked by remarkable durability and resilience. He famously played through appendicitis during a 2011 game against the Tennessee Titans, returning to start the very next week after an appendectomy. He had played every single professional snap until a fractured fibula occurred in 2014.
