From national champion backup to a sudden, season-ending injury
In short: Alex Orji’s journey through college football has been a whirlwind of championship rings, high-stakes quarterback battles, and unexpected setbacks. After rising through the ranks at Michigan, a promising new chapter at UNLV was abruptly halted by a devastating physical blow.
Alex Orji’s collegiate career began with significant promise at Sachse High School in Texas, where he established himself as a dual-threat talent. During two years as a starter, he amassed 3,467 passing yards and 2,113 rushing yards, contributing 38 passing touchdowns and 39 rushing touchdowns. These performances earned him recognition from major recruiting services, including a four-star rating from ESPN.
At the University of Michigan, Orji played a supporting role in a period of immense success. As a backup to J. J. and during the 2023 season, he contributed to the Wolverines' national championship victory against the Washington Huskies. While his passing attempts were minimal during this era, his ability to move the ball on the ground was evident, notably during a win over Michigan State where he recorded 27 yards and a touchdown.
The 2024 season brought Orji to the forefront of the Michigan offense. Having previously acted as Davis Warren's deputy, head coach Sherrone Moore selected Orji to lead the offense for the Big Ten season opener. He led the team to a 27–24 victory over the No. 11 ranked USC Trojans, marking his first collegiate start. However, the season was marked by frequent quarterback rotations involving players like Jack Tuttle and Warren.
Seeking a new challenge, Orji entered the NCAA transfer portal on December 13, 2024, and eventually committed to the UNLV Rebels on January 11, 2025. His tenure in Las Vegas, however, faced a severe setback. A severe hamstring strain and a grade 3 LCL tear occurred for Orji during the September 6, Week 2 win against UCLA. Head coach Dan Mullen confirmed these injuries would sideline Orji for the remainder of the season.
