From karting prodigy to the fast lane of single-seater racing
In short: Born on September 18, 2007, Alex Powell is rapidly ascending the motorsport ladder. Once a Mercedes Junior Team member, the Jamaican and American driver has transitioned from early karting dominance to intense battles in the F4 Middle East Championship and beyond.
Alex Powell's journey into high-speed competition began at just eight years old in the world of karting. After finding success in various United States championships, he moved to Europe to compete in Italy's 60 Mini class. His early career was marked by significant silverware, including victories in the WSK Final Cup, South Garda Winter Cup, and the Andrea Margutti Trophy. By 2022, he had established himself as a top-tier talent, securing the vice-champion title in the CIK-FIA Karting European Championship in the OK category.
The transition to single-seaters proved both challenging and rewarding. In 2023, racing with Prema in the Italian F4 Championship, Powell faced a steep learning curve, initially struggling to score points. However, his 2024 campaign with Prema Racing demonstrated immense growth; he secured the rookie championship title, finishing fifth in the standings with 176 points and six podium finishes. His ability to perform under pressure was evident in the 2025 F4 Middle East Championship, where he fought a season-long battle with teammate Emanuele Olivieri, ultimately finishing as runner-up by 58 points.
Powell's pedigree is deeply rooted in athletic excellence. He is the cousin of Olympic 100-meter gold medalist Asafa Powell, and his father, John Powell, is a Jamaican rally driver. While his long-standing association with the Mercedes Junior Team ended in late 2025, his trajectory continues upward. As of his recent campaigns, he has moved into Eurocup-3 with Campos Racing and has been slated for wildcard appearances in the Formula Regional European Championship, signaling his ongoing pursuit of the highest levels of professional racing.
