From "The Black Sheep" to the top flight of Dutch football
In short: Almere City FC's journey is far from a straight line. Born from the remnants of disgruntled Amsterdam supporters and a failed multi-sport consortium, the club has survived name changes, stadium expansions, and a strategic five-year plan to finally reach the Eredivisie.
The club possesses an unexpectedly long history, originating in 1959 when unhappy fans of the BVC Amsterdam and DWS merger established De Zwarte Schapen, or "The Black Sheep." After several rebranding and merger phases—such as FC Sloterpas and Argonaut-Zwarte Schapen—the side relocated from Amsterdam to Almere in 1995 following a six-month KNVB (Royal Dutch Football Association) ban for pitch-side violence. After a period as Sporting Flevoland and FC Omniworld, the club finally adopted its current name, Almere City FC, in 2010 to avoid confusion with AFC Ajax.
The path to professional status was fraught with political and financial hurdles. In 2000, the club was part of the Omniworld project, which included basketball and volleyball branches. However, when the Leefbaar Almere party became the largest in the city council in 2002, the city withdrew its support, causing the club to fail professional admission criteria in 2004. Private investors eventually secured the club's future, allowing it to join the Eerste Divisie in 2005. Their professional debut was delayed by heavy rain on what would have been their first match on 12 August 2005.
A transformative five-year plan, initiated by CEO John Bes in 2019, aimed to turn the club into a sustainable professional organization. This era saw significant growth, including the expansion of the Yanmar Hanasaka Stadion from 3,000 to 4,501 seats during the 2020 winter break. The strategy yielded historic results: a record-breaking 2020–21 season with 75 points and 75 goals, and a third-place finish in 2022–23. This momentum culminated in the club's first-ever promotion to the Eredivisie in June 2023, after defeating FC Emmen 4–1 on aggregate.
