The power of the serve: how Alycia Parks matched a legend's speed
In short: In the high-stakes world of professional tennis, speed is everything. During the US Open, American player Alycia Parks delivered a performance that caught the eyes of the sporting world by tying a record held by one of the game's greatest icons. It was a moment of pure, unadulterated power on the court.
For professional tennis players, the serve is more than just a way to start a point; it is a weapon of precision and velocity. At the US Open, Alycia Parks demonstrated this power by recording a serve clocked at 129 mph. This feat allowed her to tie the record for the fastest serve by a woman ever recorded at the tournament, a milestone previously shared by the legendary Venus Williams. This incredible velocity was first showcased during her first-round match. She achieved this feat by defeating qualifier Grace Min.
Parks' ascent in the professional ranks has been marked by rapid climbs in both singles and doubles rankings. In 2022, she achieved a significant breakthrough, jumping 34 spots from No. 169 to No. 135 by June 20. Her ability to compete at the highest levels was further cemented in 2023, when she reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 40 in August and a career-high doubles ranking of No. 27 in September. Her rise continued through 2023 when she secured her first top-5 victory. This success helped her reach a new singles peak of No. 50.
While her power is undeniable, her career has been a journey of navigating the complexities of the WTA Tour. She clinched a WTA 1000 doubles trophy during the 2023 Cincinnati Open and claimed her first singles title in Lyon by beating the top seed, Caroline Garcia. These achievements highlight a versatile talent capable of competing against the world's elite. Beyond her singles success, she has also proven her prowess on the WTA Challenger Tour. There, she has secured five singles and three doubles titles.
