How a high school senior became the most expensive player in NWSL history
In short: In 2023, Alyssa Thompson bypassed university to enter the professional ranks as the first overall NWSL Draft pick. Her arrival triggered a massive three-team trade, making her the most expensive player in the league's history and signaling a new era for women's professional soccer.
Alyssa Thompson's ascent through professional soccer has been defined by record-breaking milestones and rapid development. Instead of following the usual college route, Thompson opted to withdraw from Stanford University to join the 2023 NWSL Draft. Angel City acquired her as the top pick on January 12, 2023, via a $450,000 deal between Gotham FC and the Portland Thorns. This transaction established Thompson as essentially the most expensive player in the league, surpassing the previous record held by Alex Morgan.
Her impact on the pitch was immediate. During her rookie season in 2023, she scored her first NWSL regular-season goal on March 26 against NJ/NY Gotham and was named Rookie of the Month for her performances in March and April. By 2024, she had become the youngest player in NWSL history to record assists in three consecutive matches. Her prolific form persisted through 2025; she became the NWSL's youngest player to hit 25 goal contributions and Angel City's top regular-season scorer after scoring their 100th goal.
Beyond the domestic league, Thompson has achieved significant international and European success. She has represented the United States at the senior level, notably playing in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup. In September 2025, she moved to the English club Chelsea for a club-record fee of just under £1 million. Her trophy cabinet includes a victory in the 2025–26 FA Women's League Cup and being named the Most Valuable Player of the 2026 SheBelieves Cup after scoring a decisive winning goal against Colombia.
