From computer applications to cinematic blockbusters: the versatile journey of Alphonse Puthren
In short: Before he was a celebrated director in Malayalam cinema, Alphonse Pultren was studying computer applications. His path from making college short films to directing massive box-office hits like Premam reveals a multifaceted talent for directing, editing, and screenwriting.
Alphonse Puthren’s career is defined by a seamless transition from student-led projects to large-scale feature films. After being born in Aluva, Kerala, to Puthren Paul and Daisy Chacko, he started his studies for a Bachelor of Computer Application at MES College Marampally. However, his creative ambitions led him to Chennai, where he earned a filmmaking diploma from S.A.E. College. This academic foundation in both technology and film provided the technical toolkit for his early work in short films and music videos, such as the stop-motion project 'Flavours'.
His entry into the professional industry was marked by versatility. Puthren began in advertising, directing commercials for the fast food chain Bangs Fried Chicken, and worked extensively as an editor. His editing credits include trailers for notable films like 'Thattathin Marayathu', 'Oppam', and 'Marakkar', as well as the 'Ding Dong Promo Cut' for 'Super Deluxe'. This technical expertise in the editing room likely informed his directorial style, which often blends different cinematic textures.
Puthren’s directorial breakthrough came in 2013 with 'Neram', a bilingual suspense-thriller in Malayalam and Tamil. The film was an expansion of his earlier short film of the same name, which featured Vijay Sethupathi. He followed this success in 2015 with 'Premam', a romantic coming-of-age film that became a massive box-office blockbuster and one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films ever. While his third film was announced as a Tamil-language project in April 2017, his legacy remains rooted in his ability to master multiple roles—director, screenwriter, editor, and even actor—within a single production.
