From Istanbul to Manchester: The rise of Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayındır
In short: In September 2023, Altay Bayındır made history as the first Turkish player to sign for Manchester United. From his professional debut in the Süper Lig to crucial penalty saves in the FA Cup, his journey reflects the high-stakes evolution of a modern international goalkeeper.
Altay Bayındır's professional trajectory began in the Turkish Süper Lig, making his debut for Ankaragücü on 30 November 2018 during a 1–1 draw against Çaykur Rizespor. His consistent performance led to a move to Fenerbahçe in July 2019, where he established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper, surpassing teammate Harun Tekin. During his tenure at Fenerbahçe, he made 145 appearances and became known for his shot-stopping ability, including significant penalty saves against Erik Sabo in October 2020 and Radosław Murawski in December 2020.
The goalkeeper's career has been marked by both physical resilience and significant transfers. After suffering an acromioclavicular separation in October 2021, he underwent surgery and was sidelined for approximately three months. Following his success in Turkey, he moved to the Premier League in September 2023, signing a four-year deal with Manchester United for a reported fee of £4.3 million. This move made him the first Turkish player in the club's history.
Bayındır's impact at Manchester United included a standout performance in an FA Cup match against Arsenal on 12 January 2025. After a 1–1 draw through 120 minutes, he earned Man of the Match honors by saving penalties from Martin Ødegaard and Kai Havertz, helping the club reach the fourth round. Despite shifts in the squad hierarchy—including the loan of André Onana and the emergence of Senne Lammens—Bayındır has continued to compete at the highest levels, eventually joining La Liga club Celta Vigo on loan in August 2026.
