The steel giant that redefined Mexican stadium sustainability
In short: In 2015, Mexico's most expensive stadium debuted as a feat of engineering and ecology. Known as El Gigante de Acero, it wasn't just built to host football; it was designed to filter rainwater and recharge aquifers while providing some of the closest seating views in the sport.
Developed by C.F. Monterrey owner FEMSA and designed by Populous alongside Mexican firm VFO, Estadio BBVA replaced the historic Estadio Tecnológico after 63 years. Construction began in August 2011 and concluded in July 2015. At a cost of US$200 million, it was Mexico's most expensive stadium at the time of its opening, boasting a capacity that grew from 51,000 to 53,500 within its first year.
The venue is distinguished by its environmental integration. This sports arena became the inaugural North American football venue awarded a silver LEED rating for eco-friendly construction. More than one-third of the total land area consists of green zones that exceed current regulations. These spaces are designed to filter rainwater into local aquifers and feature native flora that blends with the surrounding Ecological Park, including a wooded trail connecting to the Rio La Silla.
Architecturally, the stadium prioritizes fan immersion through a 34-degree grandstand inclination and seating placed at the minimum distance allowed by FIFA. It also serves as a landmark for the region's geography; fans in the northwestern section have views of Cerro de la Silla, a peak reaching 1,820 meters above sea level. During the 2026 FIFA World Cup, it served as one of only three Mexican venues to host multiple matches, including a Round of 32 fixture.
The stadium's identity is deeply tied to its branding and history. Formerly known as Estadio BBVA Bancomer, it reflects its partnership with BBVA Mexico. On 2 August 2015, Monterrey triumphed 3–0 against Benfica during the eighth Eusébio Cup to celebrate its opening.
