How a pageant queen became Big Brother's first African American female winner
In short: Taylor Hale entered the Big Brother house as an outcast, facing social ostracization and microaggressions from her fellow contestants. Yet, she transformed her vulnerability into a historic victory, securing a massive prize and rewriting the record books for the long-running reality television franchise.
Taylor Hale's journey to television stardom began long before her historic Big Brother win. In August 2021, she was crowned Miss Michigan USA, a title achieved after the competition faced a nearly year-long postponement due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although she did not place in the finals of the Miss USA 2021 pageant, her popularity was evident as she was awarded the Miss Congeniality prize.
When she entered the Big Brother 24 house in 2022, the game was far from easy. Hale was initially targeted by her housemates, facing nominations for eviction in each of the first two weeks. She also faced disparaging remarks regarding her appearance and personality, as well as microaggressive comments from some viewers. By joining 'The Leftos' alliance during week three, she ensured her continued presence in the game, later claiming two Head of Household titles in weeks six and eleven.
The culmination of her season was a landmark moment for the series. Hale won the grand prize by an 8–1 jury vote over Monte Taylor, earning $750,000. She also secured the America's Favorite HouseGuest prize, which added $50,000 to her total, bringing her winnings to $800,000. This feat established her as the inaugural African American female winner of a standard Big Brother season and the runner-up in total earnings, trailing only season 28 victor Rick Devens.
Hale has since become a central figure in the Big Brother franchise. Beyond competing in the 2023 holiday spin-off Big Brother: Reindeer Games, where she finished as runner-up, she has transitioned into hosting roles. She has appeared in anniversary celebrations and hosted the companion show Big Brother: Unlocked alongside Derrick Levasseur.
