From the Portuguese fourth division to the English Championship dugout
In short: César Peixoto’s footballing journey is defined by dramatic shifts. After rising from the fourth tier to play under José Mourinho, the former midfielder has transitioned into a professional manager, navigating the highs of top-flight competition and the volatility of managerial appointments across Portugal and England.
Peixoto's professional ascent was remarkably rapid. After starting his career at the lowly Caçadores das Taipas near his birthplace of Guimarães, his talent as a left winger facilitated a direct jump into the Primeira Liga with Belenenses. This momentum carried him to Porto in July 2002, where he played under the legendary José Mourinho. However, his time at Porto was marked by significant setbacks, including a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained during a UEFA Champions League match against Marseille on 22 October 2003.
His career was further complicated by a high-speed car accident involving a Mercedes-Benz SL500, which damaged his professional reputation despite only causing minor bruises. Throughout his playing career, Peixoto amassed 205 Primeira Liga matches and 25 goals, representing major clubs such as Porto, Benfica, Braga, and Vitória de Guimarães. He also earned a single international cap for Portugal on 19 November 2008, appearing as a substitute in a friendly against Brazil.
Since transitioning to management in March 2019, Peixoto has experienced the cyclical nature of the sport. He has held coaching roles at several clubs, including Moreirense, Paços de Ferreira, and Gil Vicente. His managerial journey reached a new milestone on 15 June 2026, when he signed a two-year contract to lead the English Championship club Wolverhampton Wanderers, overseeing a 3–0 victory in his debut match on 7 August.
