From Nevada prep records to the Big Ten, the journey of Cade McNamara
In short: Before becoming a collegiate standout, Cade McNamara was an infielder and pitcher. After switching to football in high school, he shattered Nevada prep records, eventually leading the Michigan Wolverines to a Big Ten title and a historic College Football Playoff appearance. His career has since been defined by resilience and transfers.
Born in 2000, McNamara's athletic path was initially shaped by his father, Gary McNamara, a former Fresno State baseball player. While he began as an infielder and pitcher, he pivoted to football after his freshman year of high school to focus on the gridiron. After enrolling at Damonte Ranch in Reno, Nevada, he achieved a highly productive high school tenure, breaking state records with 146 touchdown passes and 12,804 passing yards, while securing Gatorade Player of the Year awards throughout 2017 and 2018.
McNamara's collegiate career is marked by high-stakes performances and significant transitions. At the University of Michigan, he played a pivotal role in the 2021 season, leading the Wolverines to a Big Ten Conference title and their first College Football Playoff appearance. His standout moments included a massive comeback against Rutgers in 2020 and a victory over rival Ohio State in 2021. However, competition and injuries shaped his tenure in Ann Arbor, including a knee injury in 2022 that required surgery.
Following his time at Michigan, McNamara navigated the transfer portal to seek new opportunities. He moved to the University of Iowa in December 2022, where he faced another season-ending knee injury in September 2023. After his second stint at Iowa, he entered the portal again in late 2024. Following a brief commitment to Western Kentucky in early 2025, he ultimately chose to finish his career at East Tennessee State University, competing in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision.
