How a Texas high school phenom became a top NFL draft pick
In short: Before entering the NFL, Cade Klubnik dominated the Texas high school ranks, shattering records held by professional quarterbacks. From a standout senior year to a pivotal role at Clemson, his journey from a five-star recruit to a fourth-round selection by the New York Jets is a remarkable ascent in American football.
Cade Klubnik's rise began at Westlake High School in Austin, Texas, where he established himself as a premier talent. During his high school career, he amassed 7,426 passing yards and 86 touchdowns against only seven interceptions. These statistics allowed him to set school records for career passing yards and touchdowns, surpassing previous totals set by NFL quarterbacks Drew Brees and Nick Foles, as well as Sam Ehlinger. During his final year, he earned several major honours, such as the MaxPreps Player of the Year, the All-American Bowl Player of the Year, and Texas's Gatorade Football Player of the Year.
After being rated as the top quarterback in his recruiting class as a five-star recruit, Klubnik committed to Clemson University and enrolled early in January 2022. His collegiate career began in a backup role behind DJ Uiagalelei. However, he saw increasing action throughout 2022, including a notable performance in the ACC Championship Game where he threw for 279 yards and a touchdown in a 39–10 victory over North Carolina. He eventually took over as the starter for the 2022 Orange Bowl against Tennessee, where he recorded 320 passing yards despite facing heavy defensive pressure.
Klubnik's professional trajectory was secured during the 2026 NFL draft, where the New York Jets selected him in the fourth round with the 110th overall pick. He made his professional debut on August 14, 2026, in a preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In that appearance, he completed five out of seven passes for 56 yards. His journey from a standout high school athlete to an NFL professional highlights the intense competitive ladder of American football.
