From Aberdeen prodigy to Liverpool’s high-stakes talent
In short: In 2022, a £4.2 million transfer set a record for Aberdeen. Calvin Ramsay arrived at Liverpool with the weight of expectation, yet his journey through the English leagues and loan spells has been a complex test of resilience and recovery.
Calvin Ramsay’s ascent began rapidly in the Scottish Premiership. After rising through the youth ranks at Aberdeen, he made his professional debut in March 2021 under caretaker manager Paul Sheerin. His impact was immediate; by July 2021, he had made his European debut in a UEFA Conference League qualifier against BK Häcken, contributing an assist in a 5–1 victory. This breakout period earned him the SFWA Young Player of the Year award for the 2021–22 season. During his first full season with the senior team, he managed five additional appearances. His international career also began during this era, earning a call-up to the Scotland squad in November 2022.
The summer of 2022 marked a pivotal shift. Liverpool secured Ramsay for an initial fee of £4.2 million, representing a club record sale for Aberdeen at the time. His Liverpool tenure began with high-profile appearances, including a debut against Napoli in the UEFA Champions League on 1 November 2022. However, the momentum was interrupted by injury; following surgery on an unspecified injury in February 2023, he was sidelined for the remainder of that season. He earned his first start for the Premier League side against Derby County in the EFL Cup on 9 November 2022. His international debut followed shortly after, appearing in a friendly against Turkey on 16 November.
Since his move to Anfield, Ramsay's career has been defined by a series of strategic loan spells designed to find consistent playing time. Between 2023 and 2026, he moved through several clubs, including Preston North End, Bolton Wanderers, Wigan Athletic, and Kilmarnock. While these periods provided experience in the Championship and League One, they also marked a period of frequent movement as the defender sought to reclaim his place in the Liverpool squad. His recent trajectory includes a loan to St Mirren for the 2026–27 season. Outside of football, he welcomed his first child, a son, in December 2025.
