In short: She was more than a mere villain. As a practitioner of dark voodoo, Calypso Ezili used potions, charms, and even the sacrifice of her own sister to manipulate legendary figures like Kraven the Hunter and the Lizard, weaving a web of supernatural chaos across the Marvel Universe.

Introduced in October 1980 in Amazing Spider-Man #209 by writer Denny O'Neil and artist Alan Weiss, Calypso Ezili began her journey as a minor character. A voodoo priestess of Haitian descent, her early appearances alongside Kraven the Hunter established her as a manipulative force. She was known by titles such as The Witch and The Hunter of Souls, often serving as an ally to Kraven or driving him into fits of rage that contributed to his eventual suicide in the 'Kraven's Last Hunt' storyline.

Calypso's power stems from dark rituals and necromancy. It was revealed that her supernatural abilities were obtained through the ritual sacrifice of her younger sister. Her mastery over voodoo drums, potions, and charms allowed her to control powerful entities; she famously bewitched the Lizard to attack Spider-Man and later used potions to enhance Kraven's superhuman strength, speed, and senses. Her history is a cycle of death and resurrection, involving the theft of the Amulet of Damballah and the even exhumation of her own corpse to revive herself.

The character has undergone significant transformations across different media. In the 1990 'Torment' arc by Todd McFarlane, she was elevated to a primary threat. Conversely, the animated series 'Spider-Man: The Animated Series' reimagined her as Dr. Mariah Crawford, a scientist engaged to Sergei Kravinoff. Most recently, the Sony's Spider-Man Universe film 'Kraven the Hunter' brought her to live-action, portrayed by Ariana DeBose, presenting a version where a potion from her grandmother helped grant Sergei his predator-like abilities.
