A salaryman in a fantasy realm uses modern grocery delivery to survive and thrive
In short: When Tsuyoshi Mukouda is accidentally summoned to a magical kingdom, he discovers his only unique ability is an online supermarket. Instead of fighting as a hero, he uses this power to source modern Japanese goods, winning over legendary beasts and fickle gods with the irresistible taste of home.
Tsuyoshi Mukouda, a 27-year-old office worker, found himself in a parallel world after a botched hero-summoning ritual. While others gained combat powers, Mukouda was left with the Online Supermarket skill, allowing him to instantly purchase products from modern Japan. Rather than joining the Kingdom of Reijseger’s war against demon folk, he opted for a quiet life, using his culinary skills to navigate the dangerous new environment.
His journey quickly shifted when he encountered Fel, a legendary Fenrir wolf. The creature demanded to be fed, and after tasting Mukouda’s cooking, forced him into a familiar contract. This dynamic defines the series: Mukouda provides high-quality food and otherworldly goods in exchange for protection and companionship. His party eventually expanded to include Sui, a versatile slime, and Dora, a spunky pixie dragon, alongside the ancient dragon Gon. These familiars, driven by their own voracious appetites and pride, rely on Mukouda to keep them satisfied.
The gods of this world are equally motivated by his supply chain. Deities of wind, fire, earth, water, war, and blacksmithing frequently extort Mukouda, trading their divine blessings—such as stat boosts or crafting abilities—for snacks, beer, and beauty products. Even the creator deity, Demiurge, eventually intervened to stop the divine extortion, though he too became a beneficiary, granting Mukouda a 1,500-year lifespan after receiving a gift of sake. The series, which began as a web novel in early 2016, has since expanded into a sprawling franchise including manga, spin-offs, and a MAPPA-produced anime.
The narrative subverts traditional fantasy tropes by prioritizing domestic comfort over epic conquest. Mukouda’s notoriety as a beast tamer is merely a byproduct of his ability to provide superior meals. By focusing on the mundane pleasures of food and commerce, the series explores how modern convenience can disrupt a world defined by magic and ancient power structures.
