How a British cricket club became a Brazilian football powerhouse
In short: Founded in 1899 by young men returning from the United Kingdom, Esporte Clube Vitória began as a cricket club. Today, it is a professional football institution known for its fierce rivalries and one of the most successful youth systems in the world.
The origins of Esporte Clube Vitória are rooted in the studies of the Valente brothers, Artur and Artêmio, who brought football concepts back from the United Kingdom. Originally established as the Club de Cricket Victoria in the Vitória neighborhood of Salvador, the club played its first football match on 22 May 1901. In that inaugural match, they defeated the English seamen of International Sport Club with a 3–2 victory.
The club's visual identity has undergone significant shifts. While they initially wore black and white, they transitioned to their iconic red and black horizontal stripes in 1902. This change was prompted by the difficulty of sourcing specific materials for their original colors. Today, they are known as 'Rubro-Negro' and play their home matches at the Manoel Barradas stadium, which holds 35,632 spectators.
Vitória is defined by its intense rivalry with Esporte Clube Bahia, a matchup known as the 'Ba–Vi.' This competition is considered one of the most bitter in the world, reaching a boiling point in February 2018 when nine players received red cards during a single match. Despite the volatility of professional football, including various relegations and promotions, the club achieved a major milestone in 2023 by winning the Brazilian second division title.
Beyond senior success, the club's youth academy is a global standout. Between 1995 and 2000, the system secured at least 21 international titles at its peak. This academy has served as a launchpad for notable professional talents including Bebeto, Dida, Hulk, and David Luiz.
