The wrestler who entered the ring as a cameraman
In short: Before he was a global star, Carlito Colón was a cameraman for the World Wrestling Council. He didn't just step into the spotlight; he was forced into it after a physical confrontation with a villainous wrestler. This is the origin of a wrestling dynasty built on grit and peer pressure.
Born in San Juan in 1979 to wrestling legend Carlos Colón, Carlito did not initially intend to enter the family business. He began training at age 11 for physical conditioning rather than a career path. It wasn't until after his college education that he decided to train professionally, though he initially expected to retire within a decade to run a private business. He later admitted that he faced significant peer pressure to match the legendary accomplishments of his father.
His transition from behind the lens to the ring was sparked by a specific incident in 1999. Working as a cameraman under the nickname 'Carly,' he was pestered by the promotion's main villain, Ray González. After weeks of harassment, Colón responded by punching González, leading to a beat-down by the villainous stable La Familia del Milenio. This confrontation served as his catalyst; he eventually interrupted a match between his father and González wielding a shovel, which became his trademark weapon.
Colón achieved stardom by the year 2000, when he secured the WWC Universal Heavyweight Championship as the youngest person to do so. His trajectory took him to WWE in 2003 after a series of positive scouting reports during tryouts. A landmark figure for the promotion, he remains the sole athlete to capture a title during two distinct debuts in WWE and was the second Puerto Rican to possess the Intercontinental Championship.
