In short: José Carlos Pace was a Formula One star whose career was tragically cut short in 1977. Nearly five decades later, he achieved a unique distinction in motorsport history. After his original gravesite fell into disrepair, he became the first professional driver to be interred at a major racing circuit.

Born in São Paulo in 1944, José Carlos Pace—nicknamed 'Moco'—rose through the ranks of karting and junior formulas before reaching Formula One in 1972. Driving for teams including Williams, Surtees, and Brabham, he became a respected figure in the paddock. His career highlight arrived in 1975 when he secured his sole Grand Prix victory at his home track, the Interlagos Circuit. Known for his emotional sensitivity in a sport that demanded stoicism, Pace was deeply affected by the dangers of his profession, often moved to tears by the accidents of his peers.

Pace’s life ended abruptly in March 1977 following a light aircraft crash in Mairiporã. In the immediate aftermath, the Interlagos track was renamed the Autódromo José Carlos Pace to honor his legacy. For years, he rested in the Araçá cemetery in São Paulo. However, by 2024, his mausoleum had suffered from neglect and vandalism. This prompted a dedicated effort by the Brazilian Automobile Confederation and local journalists to relocate his remains to a more dignified site.

In August 2024, after navigating significant bureaucratic hurdles, Pace’s family and supporters oversaw the transfer of his remains to the Interlagos circuit. During a final ceremonial lap, his son Rodrigo drove a vintage car once used by his father, carrying the urn to its new resting place beside a memorial bust. This unprecedented move made Pace the first driver in history to be buried within the grounds of a race track. Despite a later incident in 2025 where his bust was damaged by fans, the state government has committed to restoring the tribute to the driver who remains a national icon.
