The Portuguese winger who secured a World Cup spot in 90 minutes
In short: From the academies of Manchester City to the heights of the Champions League, Carlos Forbs has navigated a rapid ascent. His journey highlights the modern football pipeline: elite youth development, high-value transfers, and a swift transition from teenage prospect to a senior international game-changer.
Born in Sintra in 2004, Forbs' trajectory began with a move to England at age 11. He joined the Manchester City academy in 2015, where he became a standout performer for the youth categories. His impact was immediate; by 2021, he was named the under-18 player of the season after helping the club secure national titles. He proved his ability to perform on the big stage early, notably scoring a hat-trick for City in a 5–1 win against Sevilla in 2022.
The market value of such talent is immense. In 2023, Forbs moved to Ajax in a deal valued between €14 million and €19 million. This period also marked a personal shift: he transitioned from his birth name, Carlos Borges, to Carlos Forbs, adopting his mother's surname. His time in the Eredivisie served as a bridge to the top flight, where he eventually joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan in 2024 before moving to Club Brugge in 2025.
Forbs' rapid progression culminated in late 2025. After becoming a regular for Portugal's under-19 and under-21 sides, he made his senior debut on November 16, 2025. Entering as a substitute against Armenia, he won a penalty in a 9–1 victory that secured Portugal's qualification for the 2026 World Cup. His ability to influence high-stakes matches, such as his Player of the Match performance against Barcelona in the Champions League, underscores his status as a premier modern talent.
