Carlos Hyde’s remarkable journey from a hospital delivery room to a game-winning NFL touchdown
In short: On his 28th birthday, Carlos Hyde balanced the intensity of professional football with the arrival of his first child. After rushing from the hospital to lead the Cleveland Browns to a victory against the New York Jets, he returned to welcome his newborn son, capping a career defined by resilience.
Born in 1990, Carlos Hyde emerged as a standout running back at Ohio State University, where he overcame early career setbacks and a suspension to post impressive senior-year statistics. His professional trajectory began when the San Francisco 49ers selected him in the second round of the 2014 NFL draft. Navigating a crowded backfield that included veteran Frank Gore, Hyde gradually carved out his role, eventually becoming a primary starter known for his physical running style and ability to adapt to new team systems.
Hyde’s career was marked by frequent transitions across the league. Following his tenure in San Francisco, he played for several franchises, including the Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs, Houston Texans, and Seattle Seahawks. His 2018 season with the Browns was particularly notable for the team's effort to break long-standing losing streaks, culminating in a dramatic birthday performance where he secured a game-winning score against the Jets. By 2019, he reached a career milestone by surpassing 1,000 rushing yards in a single season with the Texans.
Throughout his time in the NFL, Hyde demonstrated significant physical discipline, including a notable body transformation in 2017 when he arrived at training camp at 228 pounds, the lightest he had been since high school. Despite facing injuries—such as a stress fracture in 2015 and a concussion in 2021—and the volatility of roster changes, he remained a consistent contributor. His career concluded after his second stint with the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he reunited with his former college coach, Urban Meyer, before his release in 2022.
