From seventh-round draft pick to Seahawks standout, the brief career of Chris Carson
In short: Selected near the very end of the 2017 NFL draft, Chris Carson defied expectations to become a centerpiece of the Seattle Seahawks offense. Over five seasons, he overcame significant injuries to post consecutive 1,000-yard rushing campaigns, before a neck injury ultimately forced his early retirement from professional football.
Born in Biloxi, Mississippi, and raised in Georgia, Chris Carson honed his skills at Parkview High School before playing at Butler Community College and Oklahoma State University. His professional journey began in 2017 when the Seattle Seahawks drafted him 249th overall. Despite his late-round selection, Carson quickly surpassed veteran teammates to secure the starting running back position during his rookie year, though his debut season was curtailed by a broken ankle.
Carson’s breakout occurred in 2018, when he became the first Seahawks runner to eclipse 1,000 yards in a single season since 2014. His performance was so dominant that he earned the league's monthly offensive honors for the NFC in December. He maintained this momentum in 2019, recording 1,230 rushing yards and proving to be a versatile threat in the passing game. By the end of that season, his peers recognized his impact by ranking him among the top 100 players in the NFL.
The latter half of his career was defined by physical adversity. After a productive 2020 campaign, Carson faced a persistent neck injury early in the 2021 season. Despite attempting a return, medical necessity required surgery, sidelining him for the remainder of the year. In July 2022, he officially retired, with the Seahawks releasing him under a failed physical designation that ensured his injury protections. Following his playing days, Carson transitioned to coaching, joining the staff at Redmond High School in 2026.
