How a journalist’s family ties led to a high-profile media exit
In short: Chris Cuomo’s career moved from breaking international news to a dramatic dismissal from CNN. While his reporting spanned war zones and natural disasters, it was his behind-the-scenes involvement in a political scandal involving his brother that ultimately ended his tenure at the network.
A prominent figure in American broadcasting, Chris Cuomo built a reputation through diverse reporting roles at ABC News and CNN. His work included covering the war on terrorism in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, as well as major domestic events like the Virginia Tech shooting and Hurricane Katrina. Beyond hard news, his investigative efforts led to tangible impacts, such as an industry-wide cleanup of for-profit school recruiters and a massive vehicle recall involving over 150,000 cars.
However, his professional trajectory was fundamentally altered by his connection to his brother, Andrew Cuomo, the 56th governor of New York. In 2021, amid sexual harassment allegations against the governor, reports emerged that Chris Cuomo had participated in strategic discussions to help defend his brother. Documents released by the New York attorney general’s office in November 2021 suggested that Chris used his media sources to investigate the governor's accusers and helped formulate official statements.
This involvement led to a period of intense scrutiny. While CNN initially declined to take disciplinary action in May 202<0xA0>21, the network eventually suspended him indefinitely in late November 2021. By December 4, 2021, CNN terminated his employment following an internal review of his involvement in his brother's defense. The fallout included various allegations of misconduct and legal disputes, including a demand for arbitration by Cuomo seeking $125 million in damages.
Following his departure from CNN, Cuomo transitioned to NewsNation, where he launched a new primetime program in October 2022. He has since continued his media presence through podcasts and new network programming, positioning his newer work as a more neutral alternative to partisan commentary.
