How a nightclub injury and knee tears derailed a potential first-round NFL career
In short: In 2005, Chris Canty was poised to be a top-tier NFL draft pick. However, a series of setbacks—including a detached retina from a glass bottle and a devastating knee injury—forced him to fight his way from the fourth round to a Super Bowl championship.
Chris Canty's ascent to the NFL was nearly derailed by two significant physical setbacks. During his senior year at the University of Virginia, a severe injury involving the ACL, MCL, and PCL in his left knee cut his season short. This was compounded by a traumatic eye injury in late January 2005, when a glass bottle struck his left eye during an altercation in Arizona, necessitating immediate surgery to repair a detached retina. Before his collegiate success, he attended Charlotte Latin School. During his senior year there, he earned All-Conference and All-State honours as a tight end and defensive end.
Despite these hurdles, Canty entered the 2005 NFL draft as a fourth-round selection, the 132nd overall pick, by the Dallas Cowboys. He signed a three-year, $1.3 million contract and proved his resilience by playing just one week into training camp despite his recent rehabilitations. His professional career saw him move from the Cowboys to the New York Giants, where he achieved the pinnacle of team success, starting in Super Bowl XLVI to defeat the New England Patriots in 2011. He eventually played for the Baltimore Ravens following his time in New York. His tenure with the Giants included a significant season in 2011 where he recorded career-high numbers in tackles and sacks.
Canty's career was marked by high-stakes transitions and significant contracts. In 2009, he signed a six-year, $42 million deal with the Giants, which included $17.25 million in guarantees. After his playing days ended, he transitioned into sports media, eventually becoming a national radio host on ESPN Radio, hosting the morning drive show Unsportsmanlike as of September 2023. His broadcasting journey commenced within New York City, appearing on the DiPietro, Canty, & Rothenberg show. He later expanded his reach nationally through ESPN Radio.
