From a 2003 debut to national rankings, the rise of the Chanticleers
In short: In just over two decades, Coastal Carolina football has transformed from a new program into a Sun Belt powerhouse. After navigating transitions from the Big South to the FBS, the Chanticleers have secured conference titles, defeated ranked opponents, and established intense regional rivalries.
The program's journey began in 2003 under inaugural coach David Bennett, following announcements in the late 1990s to establish a squad. For years, the team competed in the FCS, earning seven Big South Conference championships and making six playoff appearances with a 4–6 record. A significant turning point occurred in 2017 when the program officially joined the Sun Belt Conference at the FBS level, marking the end of a two-year transition period.
The era of Joe Moglia, the former TD Ameritrade CEO who took over in December 2011, brought unprecedented success. Under his leadership, the team achieved its first No. 1 FCS ranking in 2014 and secured three consecutive Big South titles. The program's momentum continued into the FBS era, highlighted by a 2020 season where they shared the Sun Belt championship with Louisiana. Despite a 37–34 loss to Liberty in the Cure Bowl that year, the team proved its mettle by winning its first bowl game the following season against Northern Illinois.
Recent years have been marked by both high-stakes victories and coaching volatility. The team has developed fierce rivalries, notably against Appalachian State, a series that saw the Chanticleers win three consecutive games between 2022 and 2024. However, the program has also faced instability; head coach Tim Beck was dismissed in November 2025, leading to the appointment of Ryan Beard in December 2025. Despite these shifts, the Chanticleers remain a competitive force in the Sun Belt, recently securing bowl victories in both 2021 and 2023.
