How one defensive tackle redefined the role of the interior lineman
In short: In 1992, Cortez Kennedy achieved the impossible. Despite his Seattle Seahawks finishing with a dismal 2–14 record, he was named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year. His dominance forced the league to rethink how large-bodied linemen could disrupt the game, cementing his status as a generational talent.
Cortez Kennedy's career was defined by a unique ability to manipulate the line of scrimmage. While many defensive tackles of his era were valued primarily for their sheer mass, Kennedy expanded the tactical possibilities for the position. His influence was so significant that he entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2012, marking him as just the second athlete to gain entry mainly through his time with the Seattle Seahawks.
His journey to the professional ranks was far from certain. After playing for the Miami Hurricanes, where he was an All-American in 1989, Kennedy was selected third overall in the 1990 NFL draft. However, he remained unsigned until just two days before the start of the season. Once he took the field, he became a cornerstone of the Seahawks' defense for 11 seasons, recording 668 tackles and 58 sacks across 167 games.
Kennedy's individual brilliance often stood in stark contrast to his team's collective struggles. His 1992 season remains a landmark in NFL history; despite the Seahawks' 2–14 record, his 14 quarterback sacks earned him the Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year award. This feat underscored a rare level of individual dominance that transcended team performance. He was eventually honored by the Seahawks with a retired number 96 jersey and a place in their Ring of Honor in 2006.
Beyond the field, Kennedy's legacy is tied to his resilience and his connection to the community. After retiring in 2000, he served as an advisor and consultant for the New Orleans Saints. He passed away in Orlando, Florida, on May 23, 2017, at the age of 48, following complications from heart failure. In his honor, a stretch of U.S. Highway 61 in Wilson, Arkansas, has been named after him.
