The punishing runner who shattered records and conquered the Super Bowl
In short: Before becoming a legend for the Cincinnati Bengals, Corey Dillon was a multi-sport standout in Seattle. His aggressive, punishing running style eventually rewrote the record books, including a single-game performance that eclipsed the legendary Walter Payton's mark, leading him to the pinnacle of professional football.
Corey Dillon's ascent began in Seattle, Washington, where he was a standout at Franklin High School. A multi-talented sportsman, he excelled as a catcher in baseball, earning a spot in the 1993 Major League Baseball draft via the San Diego Padres. His collegiate journey took him through junior college at Garden City Community College and Dixie State College before he reached the University of Washington in 1996.
At Washington, Dillon's dominance was immediate. In 1996, he set Huskies records for single-season rushing yards (1,695) and touchdowns (24). He famously achieved an NCAA record in a single quarter against San Jose State, totaling 305 all-purpose yards. This momentum carried into the NFL, where he was selected 43rd overall in the 1997 draft by the Cincinnati Bengals.
Dillon's career was defined by explosive, record-breaking performances. In 2000, he set an NFL record with 278 rushing yards in a single game against the Denver Broncos, surpassing Walter Payton's 1977 mark. While he faced injuries and frustrations with the Bengals' management, he found championship success after being traded to the New England Patriots in 2004. That year, he recorded a career-high 1,635 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns, helping the Patriots secure Super Bowl XXXIX. He retired with over 11,000 career rushing yards, ranking 21st in NFL history at the time of his departure.
Dillon's legacy was cemented in 2024 when he was inducted into the Bengals Ring of Honor, honoring a decade of professional excellence.
