The Dallas Cowboys fan who became an Eagles legend
In short: Named after his father's favorite football team, Dallas Goedert eventually rose from a college walk-on to an NFL record-breaker. His journey from South Dakota State to championship glory involves strategic trades, historic scoring feats, and a unique place in postseason history.
Dallas Christopher Goedert's path to professional stardom began far from the bright lights of the NFL. A native of South Dakota, he attended Britton-Hecla High School, where he competed in basketball, soccer, and football. His very name is a tribute to his father's devotion to the Dallas Cowboys. Goedert entered South Dakota State University as a walk-on, eventually developing into a standout for the Jackrabbits between 2013 and 2017. During his collegiate tenure, he achieved two consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons and was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award in 2016.
His transition to the professional ranks was marked by high-stakes maneuvering. In the 2018 NFL draft, the Philadelphia Eagles were so determined to secure him that they traded their second and fifth-round picks to the Indianapolis Colts just to move up and select him 49th overall. The move was specifically designed to prevent the Cowboys from drafting him to fill the void left by retiring veterans Jason Witten and James Hanna.
Since joining the Eagles, Goedert has rewritten the franchise record books. In the 2025 regular season, he scored 11 touchdowns, surpassing the previous single-season Eagles tight end record of 10, which had stood since 1965. He also achieved a historic postseason milestone by becoming the first tight end in the history of the league to record a rushing touchdown during the playoffs. His career has been a blend of individual brilliance and team success, including a Super Bowl LIX victory in February 2025.
