In short: From his Māori, Tongan, and Polish roots in New Zealand to the high-stakes intensity of the NRL, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak has built a career defined by prolific scoring and resilience. His journey through the Penrith Panthers and Canterbury Bulldogs has now led him to become a cornerstone for the New Zealand Warriors.

Born in Hamilton, New Zealand, on 17 August 1995, Watene-Zelezniak carries a rich heritage, including Māori, Tongan, and Polish descent. He is a member of the Waikato Tainui Iwi and the great-grandson of Steve Watene, a former New Zealand rugby league captain and politician. After moving to Sydney as a five-year-old, his path to professional rugby league was shaped by his time at St. Dominic’s College, Penrith, and playing junior rugby for the St Clair Comets.

His professional ascent was marked by significant milestones and setbacks. After signing with the Penrith Panthers, he made his NRL debut in 2014 against the Canberra Raiders, scoring two tries. However, his career has required immense resilience; he has faced suspensions for dangerous play and eye gouges, as well as physical setbacks like a collapsed lung in 2015 and a dislocated wrist in 2025. Despite these hurdles, he has consistently proven his scoring prowess, notably scoring his 100th first-grade try in 2024 against Cronulla.

Watene-Zelezniak has become a vital asset for the New Zealand Warriors, contributing to their 4th-place finish in 2023 and 6th-place in 2025. His elite skill was recognized when he was named alongside teammate Jamayne Issako as a Winger of the Year in the Dally M team. Beyond the pitch, he has expanded his influence into the business world, co-founding a watch company called W Zelezniak with his brother, Malakai.
