In short: From a rookie sensation to the oldest captain in State of Origin history, Daly Cherry-Evans has redefined longevity in the NRL. Discover how a player once overlooked for first grade became the most decorated halfback of his era, setting unprecedented records for games, tries, and clutch field goals.

Born in Redcliffe, Queensland, on 20 February 1989, Daly Cherry-Evans entered the professional arena with a pedigree for the sport. The son of Troy Evans, a prominent hooker in the Brisbane Rugby League during the 1980s and 1990s, Cherry-Evans began his own journey with the Redcliffe Dolphins at just five years old. His ascent was not immediate; after a successful stint in the National Youth Competition, he was initially positioned behind Trent Hodkinson for the Manly Sea Eagles' first-grade halfback role. This led to a formative period in the Queensland Cup, where he captained the Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles and earned several individual honours, including Queensland Cup Rookie of the Year.

His 2011 debut season remains one of the most impactful in NRL history. As a rookie, he helped lead Manly to an 8th premiership, becoming the first rookie halfback to lead a team to such success since 1979. That year, he earned the Dally M Rookie of the Year award and was named the world's best halfback by the Rugby League International Federation. Even in moments of individual heartbreak, such as losing the 2013 Grand Final, his brilliance was undeniable; he became only the third player since 1986 to win the Clive Churchill Medal while playing for the losing side.

Beyond the silverware, Cherry-Evans' career is defined by statistical dominance and endurance. He holds numerous NRL era records, including the most games as a halfback, most tries as a halfback, and the most 40/20s. His leadership extends to the international stage, having captained Queensland from 2019 to 2025 and served as a vice-captain for Australia. Despite facing contract disputes and significant ankle injuries in 2016, his ability to execute match-winning field goals under extreme pressure has cemented his reputation as a master of the game's tactical nuances.
